THE TURKEY / SYRIA EARTHQUAKE

The official death toll is 50,783 in Turkey and 8,476 in Syria. These numbers alone make this earthquake the deadliest natural disaster in the country’s history since the 526 AD Antioch Earthquake. However, many believe that this count is a drastic underestimation of the fatalities and that there are many more who are unaccounted for.

According to a 2022 UN report, over 50 million people are currently living in modern-day slavery. The statistics are more damning today than they’ve ever been throughout history:

The full cost and fallout in terms of lives lost, physical injuries, psychological and emotional damage, and financial destitution will not be known until years from now.
