GIVING BACK TO ANANDAM OLD AGE HOME

Updated: Apr 26

I recently had the incredible opportunity to visit the Home to experience their facility and programs firsthand. From the moment I arrived, I could feel the sense of family and care that permeated the atmosphere. The grounds are humble but well-tended, with simple dormitory-style living quarters surrounded by gardens, shrines, and wheelchair ramps for assisted mobility. Residents smiled warmly as they went about their days, pausing to chat with each other and staff. I met briefly with a few residents to hear their stories. Many expressed deep gratitude for having a safe place to live and for the loving community they found here.

A highlight of my visit was meeting the founder, manager, and several staff members who care for the residents daily. Their passion and dedication to honoring and supporting these vulnerable seniors was truly inspirational. The founder spoke eloquently about his vision over a decade ago to provide refuge for the rising number of impoverished and homeless elders in this region of India. Thanks to his compassion and initiative, hundreds of seniors over the years have found comfort in their final years.

The staff shared some of the day-to-day joys and challenges of their roles, from medical care to meal service to keeping spirits up. Many of the staff have been working at the home for years, compelled to stay because of the familial environment. They see the residents not just as aid recipients, but as their own grandparents and share heartwarming bonds. One kitchen worker glowed as she told me how singing prayers together nourishes the soul as much as food nourishes the body. The empathy and commitment of the staff is the lifeblood of the place.

I was also honored to watch some traditional dance and music performances that the home's residents and staff organized for us. To see the unbridled joy and liveliness the residents exhibited during these dances was truly moving. Music, laughter, and dance dissolve the barriers of age and infirmity. This program to keep residents active, creative, and entertained is essential to their services.

Moved by what I witnessed, I wanted to contribute meaningfully to help Anandam continue this profound work. I donated 30 new desktop computers to help establish a computer lab for their adult special needs and elderly care education programs. This will allow them to enrich the lives of both younger adults with disabilities and their own residents by teaching valuable computer skills. The founder and staff were immensely grateful for this gift and already envisioning the improvements it will bring.

In addition to the computer donation, I made a personal monetary contribution to help fund Anandam's daily costs of meals, medicine, utilities, maintenance, and staff salaries. Anandam relies entirely on individual donations and grants, receiving no government funding. I gave what I could spare to honor the priceless comfort and community they provide.

Visiting Anandam Old Age Home deeply impressed me and reaffirmed my faith in the power of selfless service. I encourage anyone who may be considering philanthropic giving to visit Anandam or donate to this organization to witness how donations materially uplift others in need. India faces increasing numbers of impoverished and homeless elders, so the work Anandam does is more vital than ever. I plan to continue finding ways big and small to support them in the years ahead. If we all give what we can, whether time, supplies, talents, or money, together we can help Anandam thrive.
